Amy Chiao is a Chinese American multimedia artist, performer, and designer from Cerritos, California. Influenced by her family of Cantonese musicians, composers, and mannequin manufacturers, her artworks spanning performance, installation, and video activate and critique object production and narratology in relation to spatial dramaturgy and the human body. Her solo and collaborative ensemble performances explore process art, text improvisation, and audience interaction to construct absurdly logical and personal world-building methodologies. Sometimes mirth-inducing and sometimes organically smelly.
Her work has been shown at Automata Theater, Human Resources LA, The Elysian Theater, Radialsystem (Berlin), Co-Lab Projects, Fuller Rosen Gallery, REDCAT, the LA State Historic Park, the Portland Art Museum, the RISD Museum, and the Walt Disney Modular Theater Lobby.
She holds a BFA in Textiles from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Scene Design from the California Institute of the Arts.
Alongside her art practice, she works as a CMF (color, material, finish) designer across commercial product industries including footwear, automotive, and robotics.
